There’s a lot of chatter in the media about the growing levels of anxiety people are experiencing – but what is anxiety, and how do you know you have it?
Anxiety is a normal reaction to uncertainty and to situations that may negatively impact us or those we love. We all feel anxious from time to time, but when your anxiety is intrusive and ongoing, seemingly without a break, then it’s time to seek help.
What does anxiety feel like?
When we feel anxiety, it’s not only in the mind, there are also clear, physical symptoms. Our heart rate increases, we feel shaky, unable to focus and even short of breath. As the day progresses, we are likely to feel overwhelmingly tired and suffer from poor concentration. You may find your mind is racing with negative thoughts that repeat and repeat on a loop of doom. You can tell yourself you’re being silly, but this doesn’t stop it happening, which only adds to the sense of fear.
These are signals you need to re-set and take some time for self care.
Don’t be embarrassed you feel this way. It’s a part of our ancient ‘fight or flight’ response, which in some people is naturally more pronounced than in others. It’s natural, not self-inflicted, or selfish, or silly.
In the first instance, it’s important to be kind to yourself; it’s okay to feel this way – it’s actually really not unusual. Admitting you are struggling is the first step to resolution. By acknowledging your anxiety, you are acknowledging you need support. And it’s always okay to take time for yourself to manage your mental health.
Treating Anxiety
When it comes to treating anxiety, we are all different and there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution.
I have trained in a wide range of different treatment forms that I mix and blend to create a bespoke approach for each of my patients.
I do not wave a magic wand, but what I can do is teach you techniques and strategies to help you dial down those feelings of anxiety and start to feel more accepting of the situation you are living with.
I will teach you how to have much more control over those destructive negative thoughts . I have had considerable success with Brainworking Recursive Therapy, a treatment that works while you remain in an awake state – no hypnosis required. Add to this techniques drawn from NLP, Thought Field Therapy (or ‘tapping’) and other effective techniques and we CAN create a more positive sense of self for you.
I offer a free 20 minute consultation to learn more about you and let you know how I can help.
